Doha. A flying visit to Qatar's capital.

The State of Qatar is a rather young one like most of the countries in its neighourhood such as the United Arab Emirates. Independent since 1971, Qatar today is ruled by the Emir of Qatar. The upcoming FIFA World Cup will be hosted in the small country that is surrounded by the Persian Golf and that to me is as worth to visit as the generally more popular states of the UAE. Here are some reasons why.

The Museum of Islamic Art is not only interesting for art lovers or (art) history experts, it gives an idea to everybody which cultures wielded influence on Qatar, its architecture, also interiors, as well as fashion and jewellery. The architecture is impressive and even fans of fine dining will find a culinary heaven in the restaurant of Alain Ducasse that is located on the top floor and offers a breathtaking view on the skyline of Doha. The interior of the restaurant is by the way designed by Philippe Starck.

A further highlight is definitely Souq Waqif, a traditional "standing market", how souq can be translated literally. You can shop spices, nuts, traditional clothes and jewellery, also fragrances and even cosmetics (like the original dark black kajal that Carrie bought at the souq in the movie Sex and the City 2 and that is actually used by Arabic women) for a very reasonable price. Bargaining is expected!
